Safety Reference Guide
International safety standards
Test equipment must be designed to protect people who work in the high-voltage,
high-current environment. In order to prevent injury the International Electrotechnical
Commission (IEC) develops international general standards for safety of electrical
equipment for measurement, control and laboratory use. The most current standard 61010
specifies overvoltage categories for electrical distribution systems. The Category rating increases
based on the closeness to the power source and a higher level of user protection is required from
test equipment.
Proposed Energy Regions*
CAT I
Electronics, signal level single-phase receptacle loads
CAT III
Three-phase distribution, large building lighting systems, distribution panel devices
CAT II
Appliances, portable tools
CAT IV
Three-phase atutility connection, electricity meters, outside and service entrance
* Category ratings per EN 61010-1. Category boundaries may not be exact.
